Day 3 Myeik Archaepology 30th December

We woke up reasonably early again to find we had drifted over night out of the bay. It had been quite a windy night. Swimming was held off until after breakfast and we moved back closer to shore. As soon as practically possible jumping off the boat resumed by the kids before everyone headed to the beach by boat, swimming or kayak where the main activity was snorkelling. A number of different fish were seen, clams and hundreds of sea urchins much to Indies horror. We were looking for what we thought had been a sea otter entering the water from the beach. After a good couple of hours we headed back and cruised about 10 miles to a large island Phip Lari where we needed to pick up fresh water. It was a stunning day and the adults enjoyed reading on the deck whilst the kids played cards.

We came into a beautiful bay, hosting a small village where we had to wonder if they realised they were living in what we could consider paradise. We went to shore to visit the fishing village, which was also sporting a new Buddhist monastery with brand new 90 concrete steps heading to a golden pagoda at the top. A lovely monk at the top of the steps showed us around and pointed out 2 trees merged into one. The views were stunning. Very hot we headed back to the boat where the kids dived straight in with all clothes on. Lots of fish were swimming around the boat even more so when hugo started feeding them. The water had finished being transferred from the raft hooked in from a pipe from the springs in the mountain. Very innovative.

Back on board for another 3 course lunch whilst we cruised around to the other side of the island where we moored for the evening. We enjoyed a lovely afternoon swimming, snorkelling, jumping off the boat, playing cards and doing crosswords. The snorkelling was disappointing for such a beautiful setting as local fisherman have killed off the reefs using dynamite as a means of fishing. Another sea gypsy family came to visit looking for food which the crew provided from lunch leftovers and other items.

It was an idyllic spot and we were not impressed when a luxury catamaran pulled in some way behind us to share the space. A perfect day was topped off with another 3 course meal of chicken, crab, Tom yum soup and stir fry mustard leaves after a stunning sunset. Another early night ensued as surprisingly the kids are putting themselves to bed a new experience for all!
